Using horizontal panels on ultrawide monitors is extremely cumbersome. It boils down to two problems:
It takes up precious vertical real estate, which is what you have the least of in an ultrawide.
It wastes horizontal real estate, as all components on the panel are very far from each other, leaving a lot of blank space in between.
Suggested solution
Having a vertical layout, where the panel is either on the left or right side of the display solves both the issues mentioned above, not to mention it also adds the option even to users who aren't on ultrawides, but still wish to use a vertical panel.
Alternative
An alternative would be to still have a horizontal panel, but it is limited in width. This solves the problem of panel elements being very far from each other, but still leaves the other mentioned issue unaddressed.

Haha, if I start working on a vertical bar, I'll probably mess up the CSS since I need to make it work for both vertical and horizontal layouts—and I'm not great at it.

I will push this to another branch (vertical-bar) once it's complete.

I don't think I'll work on that since I don't have an ultrawide monitor and I don't like vertical bars.
Fair enough. Your original comment was a lot more encouraging though 😅
